More Questions Than Answers  -  11.12.10

Ever wonder where to start a conversation with someone about something you're passionate about?  It's a fine line to walk. I was speaking to a long time close friend of mine with whom I can share anything.  He is a bright, well educated guy with an outlandish sense of humor.  We were discussing some relevant political issues when I made a couple suggestions.

I mentioned how informative twitter can be and how one can gleam a huge amount of information in a fairly short time period.  I proceeded to tell him about a few movers and shakers on-line and links to view when he stopped me dead in my tracks.  He said, "I have four kids, a job I work ten hours a day and I don't have time to read all that crap."  "I need someone to tell me what to believe, to give me the information I should have, that's what I have time for!"  I was a deer gazing longingly into headlights with the inability to move or speak.

Understanding politics, like anything else one wishes to do well is a full time job. Keeping up to date, sorting through the deluge of information is part of the daily grind, and for many, the ROI isn't worth the effort. Conversing with someone who has very little understanding of the issues and offers only media lathered clichés is frustrating to say the least, for all involved.  If you have no comprehension of football, then understanding why the QB audibles from a deep post route to a draw play after spotting a cover two dime defense with a three man front is like understanding Chinese.

I'm still sorting through the take away from this conversation. I have more questions than answers. It makes me realize the importance of our information sources.  If people only have time to listen, do they inherently take most of what they hear for granted? If they're mind is already made up, do they tend to believe data that reaffirms their  beliefs?  Do people search out media outlets that tell them what they want to hear? What percentage of folks change their beliefs and why?  I have no idea, but I'm going to keep poking around these issues.

Liberals are 'Certain' that this Muslim (Maj. Nidal Hasan) shouting 'Allahu Akbar' in a maniacal voice as he shot, killed and wounded American Soldiers, had nothing to do with Islam.

A Word To The Acquisitive Miser:

There is the trouble in the getting of it

There is anxiety in the keeping it

There are temptations in the use of it

This is guilt in the abuse of it

There is sorry in the losing of it

There is perplexity in the disposing of it
